Transit-Oriented Communities
What Are Transit-Oriented Communities?
Transit-Oriented Communities (TOCs) are walkable communities that support transit use (and other modes!) through policy, planning, and design. TOCs are usually more compact than non-TOCs, which makes it easier to walk from place to place. They also usually have areas where spaces for living, working, and playing are mixed together, creating centers for activity.
Creating Transit-Oriented Communities
The Congress of Neighboring Communities (CONNECT) and Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) created Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) toolkits for ten (10) municipalities surrounding the city of Pittsburgh to provide best practices and recommendations that enhance mobility in each respective municipality.
Although the toolkits were tailored to the respective needs of the communities, municipalities confronted challenges within the implementation process that were unaccounted for in their toolkits. Mobilify Southwestern Pennsylvania and CONNECT sponsored a series of seminars to increase their understanding of the process while equipping them to apply their learnings to their respective communities. We also produced the guide shown to the right.
